The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50311 is a taper length, straight-shank drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metal fabrication and machining applications. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a coated finish, this bit carries a 118-degree standard point angle and a web-thinned, tapered web configuration for improved penetration and chip clearance. At 0.1590 inches in diameter (Wire Size 21), it delivers consistent, repeatable holes within a tight tolerance of +0.0000 to -0.0007 inches. The right-hand spiral flute design and taper length body make it well suited for production drilling environments where extended reach over a jobber-length bit is needed. Licensed trades and machining professionals are the primary installers.
This bit is rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. The taper length format provides extra flute length compared to a standard jobber bit, giving better chip evacuation and reach in deeper holes or fixture setups. It is a practical choice for machine shops, maintenance technicians, and fabricators working on structural steel, tooling plates, or similar ferrous workpieces. The coated finish helps extend cutting life under moderate production loads without requiring coolant-through capability.
Designed as an OEM-style general-purpose replacement or production drill bit for use in standard drill chucks accepting a 0.1590-inch straight shank, compatible with bench drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held drilling equipment suited for ferrous metal work.
Installation and use should be performed by machinists or qualified trade professionals familiar with metal-cutting operations. Secure the straight shank firmly in a drill chuck or collet before operation and ensure the workpiece is properly clamped or fixtured to prevent movement. Power down and de-energize any machine tool before changing or inspecting the bit. Follow applicable shop safety standards and machine manufacturer guidelines for speed and feed settings appropriate to the workpiece material.
