The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50076 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit engineered for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built to M42 cobalt steel specifications, this bit carries a gold oxide coating that improves lubricity and heat resistance during extended cuts. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust requirements compared to conventional 118-degree geometry. With a straight-cylindrical shank measuring 17/32 inches in diameter and an overall length of 6-5/8 inches, the 50076 fits standard drill chucks and magnetic base drills used in metal fabrication, aerospace, and mechanical contracting applications. Licensed machinists, pipefitters, and millwrights are the primary installers.
This bit is optimized for drilling titanium and other high-strength alloys where standard HSS tooling wears prematurely. The Series 550 designation indicates a heavy-duty grade suitable for production and MRO environments where consistent hole quality and tool life are priorities. Rated to NAS 907 Type J and DIN 338 standards, it is appropriate for aerospace-spec work where material certification traceability matters. The 2-flute spiral configuration with a regular helix and web-thinned, tapered web supports efficient chip evacuation in deep-hole applications with a 4-13/16-inch flute length.

Cobalt drill bits should be run at reduced surface speeds compared to HSS tooling, with consistent cutting fluid or coolant application to manage heat buildup. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent walking even with the split-point geometry. Inspect the shank for burrs before seating in the chuck to avoid runout. Resharpening, if required, should be performed by a qualified tool grinder to maintain the original split-point profile.
