The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49762 is a taper length, straight shank drill bit designed for right-hand cutting in metal fabrication and general machining applications. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a coated finish, it measures 31/32 inch (0.9688 inches) in diameter and carries a standard 118-degree split point. Overall length is 11 inches with a flute length of 6.375 inches and a shank length of 4.625 inches. The web-thinned, tapered web configuration reduces thrust and improves chip evacuation. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die techs, and industrial maintenance mechanics are the primary users of this bit.
The 49762 is suited for drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron in general-purpose production and maintenance environments. Its taper length body provides greater reach than a jobber-length bit, making it appropriate for deeper hole applications where a standard-length drill cannot reach. The straight shank fits directly into conventional drill chucks on drill presses, CNC machines, and hand-held power drills with appropriate chuck capacity. No coolant-through capability is present, so external coolant or cutting fluid should be applied when drilling harder alloys.
Designed as a general-purpose taper length drill for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. Compatible with any drill press, lathe, or CNC machine fitted with a chuck or collet that accepts a 0.9688-inch straight shank.
Installation and use should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance mechanic familiar with rotating cutting tools. Always power down and lock out the machine before loading or removing the bit. Secure the straight shank fully in the chuck and verify concentricity before initiating a cut. Apply appropriate cutting fluid when working with hard alloys to extend tool life and prevent premature dulling.
