The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49727 is a taper length, straight-shank drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metalworking applications. Built from high speed steel and coated for added wear resistance, this right-hand-cut bit features a standard 118-degree split point and a web-thinned, tapered web configuration that reduces thrust and improves chip evacuation. At 27/64 inch (0.4219 inches) in diameter, it is sized for production and maintenance drilling where a longer flute length provides deeper hole capability than a jobber-length bit. Licensed HVAC techs, machinists, and maintenance tradespeople reach for taper length bits when jobber bits fall short.
This bit is suited for drilling into alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron in both shop and field settings. The Series 120 designation places it in CHICAGO-LATROBE's general-purpose line, making it a practical choice for fabrication shops, mechanical contractors, and maintenance facilities that need reliable, repeatable performance across a range of ferrous materials. The spiral flute geometry handles standard chip loads without specialized coolant delivery, as this bit does not feature through-coolant capability.
Rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. Designed as a general-purpose taper length drill bit compatible with standard 3-jaw drill chucks accepting a 27/64-inch straight shank.
Machinists and mechanical tradespeople should secure the shank fully in a properly sized drill chuck before operation. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit if the coating is compromised or the point is damaged. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and maintain hole-diameter tolerance. Always wear appropriate eye protection and follow applicable shop safety standards when drilling metal.
