The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49717 is a taper length, straight-shank drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. Part of the Series 120 lineup, it features a 17/64 inch (0.2656 inch) diameter, a 118-degree standard point angle, and a web-thinned, tapered web configuration that reduces thrust and improves chip clearance. The right-hand spiral flute geometry promotes consistent chip evacuation during through-hole and deep drilling operations. Constructed from high speed steel with a coated finish for added wear resistance, this bit suits production and maintenance drilling applications where accurate, repeatable hole size is required.
This drill bit is suited for use on ferrous materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron in both shop and field environments. Its taper length body, measuring 6.25 inches overall with a 3.875-inch flute length, provides additional reach compared to a jobber-length bit, making it practical for drilling into deeper stock or through thicker structural members. The straight shank diameter of 0.2656 inches (6.75 mm) fits standard drill chucks used on drill presses, hand drills, and CNC machining centers. The coated finish extends service life under moderate-duty cutting conditions.
Designed for general-purpose drilling in alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. Compatible with any standard drill chuck accepting a 0.2656-inch straight shank across drill presses, portable drills, and CNC equipment.
This drill bit is installed and operated by machinists, maintenance technicians, and trade professionals using standard drilling equipment. Secure the straight shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify chuck key removal before powering the spindle. Always use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling ferrous metals to manage heat buildup, even though this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Wear appropriate PPE including eye protection when operating rotary cutting tools.
