The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49714 is a taper length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in ferrous metals and similar materials. Built from high speed steel with a coated finish, this bit measures 7/32 inch (0.2188 inches) in diameter with a 118-degree standard point angle and a web-thinned, tapered web configuration for improved chip clearance and reduced thrust at entry. Overall length is 6 inches with a 3-5/8-inch spiral flute length. The right-hand, regular spiral flute design suits production and maintenance drilling environments. Machinists, toolroom techs, and maintenance professionals use this bit in manual drill presses and CNC setups alike.
The 49714 is suited for drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron in light manufacturing, fabrication shops, and industrial maintenance applications. The straight shank at 0.2188 inches diameter accepts standard drill chucks without adapters. The taper length body provides additional reach compared to a jobber-length bit, making it useful in setups where a standard-length bit cannot reach the workpiece. Shank length is 2.375 inches. The no-coolant-through design keeps tooling cost down for operations that do not require through-coolant delivery.
Designed as a general-purpose taper length drill bit for use in drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. Compatible with any standard drill chuck accepting a 0.2188-inch straight shank.
Install and remove drill bits only after the spindle has come to a complete stop and the machine is de-energized or locked out per applicable LOTO procedures. Secure the straight shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify runout before drilling production parts. Taper length bits are more susceptible to deflection than stub-length bits; use appropriate feed rates and speeds for the material being drilled. Inspect the cutting edge and coating condition before each use.
