The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49524 is a taper length high speed steel drill bit designed for accurate, consistent hole drilling in ferrous metals and alloy materials. Built to Series 255AN specifications, it features a 118-degree standard point angle and a right-hand spiral flute with web thinning to reduce thrust and improve chip evacuation. The 3/8-inch (0.3750-inch) diameter with a close tolerance of +0.0000 to -0.0010 inches ensures dimensional accuracy in production and maintenance drilling. A tanged shank provides positive drive engagement in compatible chucks and holders. This bit is used by machinists and maintenance technicians in metal fabrication, tool and die, and general industrial applications.
The 49524 is suited for drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, and tool steel in both shop and field environments. The taper length body, with a 4.25-inch flute length and 6.75-inch overall length, gives added reach compared to jobber-length bits without sacrificing rigidity. It is a general-purpose drill appropriate for manual drill presses, CNC drilling operations, and maintenance drilling tasks where standard jobber bits fall short in flute length. The coated finish extends surface durability under normal cutting conditions.
Designed as an OEM-style general-purpose taper length drill bit for use in drill presses, lathes, and compatible drilling equipment accepting a 0.3750-inch tanged shank. Material compatibility includes alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, and tool steel as specified by the manufacturer.
Installation and use of this drill bit should be performed by qualified machinists or trained maintenance technicians familiar with rotating cutting tools. Secure the tanged shank fully in the chuck or holder before operation, and verify the workpiece is firmly clamped. Always wear appropriate eye protection and follow applicable OSHA and shop safety standards when operating drilling equipment. Do not exceed the recommended feed and speed parameters for the workpiece material and machine type.
