The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49415 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in cast iron and steel. Built from coated high speed steel, it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and cuts required thrust compared to standard 118-degree geometry. The stub-length body — 1.75 inches overall with a 0.75-inch flute — sits closer to the chuck, minimizing deflection and improving hole location accuracy in short-reach applications. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without adapters. This bit carries NAS 907 designation and meets ISO standards, making it suitable for aerospace and precision manufacturing environments.
The 49415 is used in screw machine operations, CNC machining centers, drill presses, and hand-held drilling applications where a stub-length bit is preferred for rigidity. Its 0.082-inch diameter corresponds to Wire Size 45. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel. The short overall length and parallel web configuration make it especially effective in gang-drilling fixtures and tight-clearance setups. It is sold individually with a minimum order quantity of 12 units per order.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks accepting straight cylindrical shanks. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel. Suitable for screw machine operations, CNC drilling, and general-purpose production drilling where Wire Size 45 (0.082 inches) is specified.
Install in a drill chuck rated for the intended spindle speed; consult published surface footage tables for high speed steel in the target material to set correct RPM. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify concentricity before cycling. Use appropriate cutting fluid or mist coolant when drilling steel to extend tool life, noting that this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Inspect the split point for chipping or wear before each production run and replace when diameter falls outside tolerance.
