The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49413 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in cast iron and steel. It is manufactured from high speed steel with a coated finish and features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and cutting thrust at entry. The stub-length body — 1.75 inches overall with a 0.75-inch flute length — provides added rigidity over jobber-length bits, making it well suited for CNC drilling centers, drill presses, and screw machine applications where chatter and deflection must be minimized. Two spiral flutes with regular helix and a parallel web configuration support efficient chip evacuation in short-hole drilling cycles.
This bit is intended for professional metalworking and machining operations, primarily in job shops, production facilities, and maintenance environments. It is sized to wire gauge 43 (0.0890 inches decimal) and is commonly used where close-tolerance holes are required in steel or cast iron components. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without a reducing sleeve. Its heavy-duty grade and NAS 907 specification make it appropriate for demanding production runs where dimensional consistency and tool life are priorities.
Designed as a heavy-duty screw machine length drill bit for use in cast iron and steel workpieces. Fits any standard drill chuck accepting a straight-cylindrical shank at this diameter range.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die technicians familiar with drilling feeds and speeds for ferrous materials. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify runout before beginning a production run. Always use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the workpiece material, even though this bit does not have through-coolant capability. Inspect the cutting edges and web area regularly; regrind or replace the bit when point geometry shows wear to maintain hole tolerance.
