The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49410 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in cast iron and steel. Built from heavy-duty high speed steel with a coated finish, this bit features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and cutting force on entry. The web-thinned, parallel-web construction keeps the cutting geometry consistent across the full working life of the bit. At 0.098 inches in diameter (Wire Size 40) and an overall length of 1-13/16 inches, the shortened flute and body length add rigidity for accurate, tight-tolerance holes in screw machine and turret lathe applications. Diameter tolerance is held to +0.0000 to -0.0005 inches, meeting NAS 907 and ISO standards.
This bit is a fit for production environments where short, rigid tooling is required, including screw machine operations, automatic lathes, and bench drill press work on ferrous metals. The right-hand spiral flute efficiently clears chips from cast iron and steel workpieces. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard drill chucks and collets. Series 159 is a heavy-duty product line intended for shops running tight tolerances and higher feed rates than general-purpose bits can sustain reliably.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or production-stock drill bit for screw machine operations, turret lathes, and automatic drilling equipment cutting cast iron and steel. No coolant-through capability; intended for dry or external coolant applications only.
This bit is installed by machinists and toolroom technicians in standard drill chucks or collets sized for straight-cylindrical shanks. Secure chuck engagement across the full shank length before operation to prevent slipping under load. When replacing a worn bit in a production setup, verify spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter before resuming the run. No coolant-through port is present; apply external cutting fluid as required by shop procedure for steel applications.
