The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49386 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in ferrous metals including cast iron and steel. It measures 0.177 inches (Wire Size 16) in diameter with an overall length of 2-3/16 inches and a flute length of 1-1/8 inches. The bit is manufactured from heavy-duty high speed steel with a coated finish for extended tool life. A 135-degree split point reduces walking and breakthrough burr, while the web-thinned, parallel-web construction reduces thrust and improves chip evacuation. The short screw machine length profile increases rigidity and reduces deflection in CNC and turret lathe applications. This bit is sold individually and is built to NAS 907 and ISO standards.
This drill bit is suited for production machining environments where rigidity and repeatability matter. The screw machine length format is commonly used in drill presses, turret lathes, CNC machining centers, and automatic screw machines where stub-length tooling minimizes runout. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel. The right-hand spiral flute and straight cylindrical shank allow direct chuck mounting without adapters. The heavy-duty grade and NAS 907 specification make it appropriate for aerospace and industrial manufacturing contexts where dimensional tolerance and consistency are critical.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks and collets accepting a straight cylindrical shank. Intended for drilling cast iron and steel in production machining applications. Part of Chicago-Latrobe Series 159.
This bit is installed and removed by a licensed machinist or tooling technician using a standard keyed or keyless drill chuck. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before changing tooling. Verify chuck capacity accommodates the straight cylindrical shank diameter before mounting. Do not exceed the recommended feed and speed parameters for the workpiece material to avoid premature edge failure.
