The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49113 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for left-hand cutting in general-purpose drilling applications. Manufactured from high speed steel with a bright/uncoated finish, this bit features a 0.089 inch (wire gauge #43) diameter, a standard 118-degree point angle, and a parallel web configuration with web thinning for improved chip clearance. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without modification. At 1-3/4 inches overall length with a 3/4-inch flute, the screw machine length format provides added rigidity over jobber-length bits, making it well suited for close-tolerance work in confined spaces.
This bit is intended for use on aluminum, copper, magnesium, slate, thermoplastic, and wood workpieces. The left-hand spiral flute design makes it particularly useful for extracting broken fasteners and reverse-drilling applications where conventional right-hand bits are not appropriate. It is packaged as a single unit and sold in multiples of 12, making it a practical stocking item for machine shops, maintenance facilities, and trade professionals who regularly work with left-hand extraction tooling. The Series 157L designation identifies it within CHICAGO-LATROBE's general-purpose screw machine drill family.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks accepting a straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials include aluminum, copper, magnesium, slate, thermoplastic, and wood as specified by the manufacturer for Series 157L general-purpose screw machine drill bits.
This bit is installed and operated by machinists, maintenance technicians, and trade professionals using standard drill presses, lathes, or hand drills equipped with a compatible chuck. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in the chuck before operation and confirm the drill is set to reverse rotation to engage the left-hand flute properly. Inspect the cutting edge for wear before each use, and do not exceed the recommended feed and speed parameters for the workpiece material to avoid premature tool failure.
