The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49088 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metal fabrication, maintenance, and trade shop environments. Built from high speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, it cuts a 0.1695-inch diameter hole and features a left-hand spiral flute configuration. The 118-degree standard point angle and web-thinned tip reduce entry force and help the bit self-center on contact. At 2.125 inches overall length with a 1.0625-inch flute, the shortened body suits turret lathes, screw machines, and drill presses where a compact tool profile is required. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
This bit is suited for drilling aluminum, copper, magnesium, thermoplastics, wood, and slate. The left-hand cutting direction makes it particularly useful for extracting broken right-hand fasteners or studs, since the bit tends to back damaged hardware out as it advances. The straight cylindrical shank seats directly in standard three-jaw chucks and collet holders without adapters, making it straightforward to deploy on common shop machines.
Designed as a general-purpose screw machine length drill bit within the CHICAGO-LATROBE Series 157L line, suited for use in turret lathes, screw machines, and standard drill presses equipped with a straight-shank collet or three-jaw chuck.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet and verify runout before drilling. Ensure the workpiece is clamped or fixtured before starting the cut. When using for fastener extraction, confirm the drilling machine spindle is set to reverse rotation to match the left-hand flute direction. Inspect the cutting edges for wear after extended use in abrasive materials such as slate or thermoplastics, as edge condition directly affects hole diameter accuracy.
