The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49016 is a screw machine length (stub length) drill bit engineered for high-productivity drilling in ferrous metals. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a straw oxide coating, it delivers superior heat and wear resistance compared to standard HSS tooling. The 135-degree split point geometry reduces walking and thrust force, promoting accurate hole entry without a center punch. At 2.913 inches overall length with a 1.339-inch flute length, this short-body design is optimized for rigid setups and high-cycle production drilling. The 6.70 mm (0.2638-inch) diameter is held to a tight tolerance of +0.0000 to -0.0010 inches. Licensed machinists, toolroom operators, and maintenance mechanics are the typical users.
This bit is suited for drilling tool steel, alloyed steel, carbon steel, and cast iron in production and maintenance environments. The stub length reduces deflection in CNC machining centers, turret lathes, drill presses, and hand-held drilling fixtures where rigidity is critical. The Series 559 designation follows DIN 1897 specification, making it a recognized standard form factor for metric-dimensioned work. Maximum drilling depth is rated at 0.923 inches, consistent with the 4xD flute-by-diameter ratio of this stub-length format.
Designed for use in drill presses, CNC machining centers, turret lathes, and hand-held drilling equipment with chucks or collets accepting a 6.70 mm straight shank. Intended primary workpiece materials are tool steel, alloyed steel, carbon steel, and cast iron.
Install in a properly sized chuck or collet and confirm shank is fully seated and tightened before starting the spindle. Secure the workpiece in a vise or fixture — never hold by hand when drilling ferrous metals. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the workpiece material to extend tool life, noting this bit does not have through-coolant capability. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit if the split point geometry is compromised.
