The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49014 is a screw machine length (stub-length) cobalt drill bit designed for drilling into hard and abrasion-resistant ferrous materials. Built to DIN 1897 standards and classified as heavy duty grade M42 cobalt, the bit features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and lowers thrust on entry. The 6.00 mm diameter straight-cylindrical shank runs 68.43 mm in overall length with a 29.03 mm spiral flute. The oxide coating provides additional lubricity and surface hardness. This bit is installed and used by machinists, tool-and-die shops, and maintenance technicians working with production drilling operations on ferrous stock.
The 49014 is suited for production and job-shop drilling in tool steel, alloyed steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. The stub-length body increases rigidity and reduces deflection compared to jobber-length bits, making it the preferred choice when drilling in tight clearances, fixtures, or drill press setups where chatter and runout must be minimized. The 4xD flute-to-diameter ratio supports chip evacuation at moderate depths. Maximum drilling depth is 0.8267 inches. Suitable for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual operations requiring repeatable hole geometry in hard ferrous workpieces.
Designed as an OEM-style screw machine drill bit compatible with standard 3-jaw drill chucks, collet-style tool holders, and keyless chucks accepting a 6.00 mm (0.2362 inch) straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials include tool steel, alloyed steel, carbon steel, and cast iron.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician. Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet holder before engaging the spindle, and verify runout with a dial indicator on precision setups. De-energize and lock out the machine before changing bits. Do not exceed the recommended maximum drilling depth of 0.8267 inches for this stub-length geometry, and use appropriate cutting fluid for extended drilling cycles in hardened steel.
