The CHICAGO-LATROBE 49005 is a screw machine length drill bit engineered for high-performance drilling in tough ferrous materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel with an oxide coating, this bit delivers improved heat and wear resistance during heavy-duty drilling operations. It features a 135-degree split point for fast penetration and reduced walking on hard surfaces. With a 2.50 mm diameter and an overall length of 1.755 inches, the short flute-to-length ratio of this screw machine style provides added rigidity and reduced deflection. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians reach for this bit when drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, and tool steel in production or repair environments.
The 49005 is designed for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and hand-held power tools where stub-length rigidity is required. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without modification. Its 2-flute spiral configuration and regular spiral type promote efficient chip evacuation in short-depth holes. Typical applications include component fabrication, fixture work, and general metalworking where dimensional accuracy and bit stability are priorities. This bit conforms to DIN 1897 specification, making it suitable for metric drilling programs and tooling sheets that call out DIN-standard stub drills.
Designed for drilling tool steel, alloyed steel, carbon steel, and cast iron. Fits any drill chuck accepting a 2.50 mm straight-cylindrical shank. Conforms to DIN 1897, Series 559.
Install and remove drill bits only with the machine powered off and the spindle fully stopped. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify concentricity before beginning a cut. Follow applicable machine-shop safety practices and the equipment manufacturer guidelines for spindle speeds and feed rates appropriate to the workpiece material. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit if the point shows signs of rounding or heat damage.
