The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48811 is a screw machine length drill bit engineered for general-purpose drilling in metalworking applications. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, it features a 0.281 inch (9/32 inch) diameter, a 118-degree standard point angle, and two spiral flutes in a regular helix pattern. The straight-cylindrical shank allows direct chucking in standard drill chucks and machine spindles. Web-thinned geometry reduces thrust and improves chip clearance at entry. At 2-11/16 inches overall length with a 1-1/2 inch flute length, this stub-length format provides greater rigidity than jobber-length bits, making it well suited to production drilling and CNC operations where deflection must be minimized.
The 48811 is designed for drilling cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel in shop and production environments. Its screw machine length profile is a standard fit for turret lathes, drill presses, machining centers, and CNC mills where short, rigid tooling is preferred. The right-hand cut with spiral flutes handles through-hole and blind-hole operations in light to medium stock removal. This bit is intended for use by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and production floor personnel working to ISO standards.
Designed as a general-purpose replacement or stock drill bit compatible with standard straight-shank drill chucks and collet systems on drill presses, lathes, and machining centers. Workpiece materials include cast iron, non-ferrous metal, and steel per Series 157 specifications.
Installation and use of this bit should be performed by a qualified machinist or trained shop technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the chuck is secure before inserting or removing the bit. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling steel or cast iron to extend tool life and maintain tolerance. Always verify runout and chuck grip before initiating a cut to prevent bit deflection or breakage.
