The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48759 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for fast, accurate drilling in a compact, rigid format. It measures 0.041 inches in diameter, corresponding to wire gauge size 59, and is manufactured from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright uncoated finish. The 118-degree standard point angle and two-flute spiral design provide reliable cutting performance on cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel. The straight cylindrical shank seats securely in standard drill chucks. At 1.375 inches overall length with a 0.5-inch flute length, this stub-length geometry minimizes deflection and is well suited to drill press, CNC, and hand-tool applications in production and maintenance environments.
This bit belongs to the Chicago-Latrobe Series 157 and is built for general-purpose drilling in metalworking trades. The screw machine length format is shorter than a jobber drill, making it the preferred choice when working in tight clearances, drilling thin-gauge stock, or when chatter and bit flex are concerns. It is commonly used in precision machining, tool-and-die work, sheet metal fabrication, and HVAC or plumbing rough-in where small-diameter pilot or clearance holes are required. The web-thinned parallel web configuration reduces thrust force at entry, which is especially useful when drilling harder ferrous materials.
Designed as a general-purpose screw machine drill bit suitable for use in standard drill chucks, drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held power tools that accept straight cylindrical shanks. Rated for drilling cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel per Series 157 specifications.
Installation of this drill bit should be performed by a machinist, fabricator, or qualified tradesperson familiar with rotating cutting tools. Secure the straight cylindrical shank fully in the chuck and verify runout before beginning a cut. Always wear appropriate eye protection and ensure the workpiece is clamped or fixtured before drilling. Follow applicable shop safety standards and equipment manufacturer guidelines when operating drill presses or CNC equipment.
