The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48705 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metalworking applications. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright/uncoated finish, it measures 0.2055 inches in diameter and carries a wire gauge designation of #5. The 118-degree standard point angle and web-thinned construction reduce entry force and improve centering on flat and curved surfaces. At 2-3/8 inches overall length with a 1-1/4-inch spiral flute, this stub-length geometry provides added rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, making it well suited to production drilling environments where deflection and chatter must be minimized.
This drill bit is intended for use in screw machine operations, drill press work, and CNC or manual turret lathe applications where short, stiff tooling is required. Primary workpiece materials include cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without adapters. Its general-purpose grade and ISO-standard construction make it a practical choice for job shops, production floors, and maintenance technicians who need a reliable stub drill at standard tolerances.
Designed as a general-purpose screw machine length drill bit compatible with standard drill chucks accepting straight-cylindrical shanks. Suitable for drilling cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel workpieces as specified by the manufacturer.
Installation and use of this drill bit should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die technicians familiar with proper speeds and feeds for HSS tooling. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in a drill chuck or collet before operation and verify runout is within acceptable limits. Always power down and de-energize the machine spindle before changing tooling. Do not exceed the recommended cutting parameters for the workpiece material to avoid premature tool wear or breakage.
