The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48550 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in metalworking and industrial applications. Built from high speed steel with a coated finish, this bit delivers consistent performance across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It features a 118-degree standard point angle with web thinning for easier penetration and reduced thrust. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard chucks. At 5.125 inches overall length with a 3.25-inch flute length, the screw machine format provides added rigidity over jobber-length bits, making it well suited for close-tolerance work on drill presses and CNC machines.
This bit is used in general purpose metal drilling across manufacturing, maintenance, and fabrication environments. The 25/32-inch diameter and two-flute spiral design handle cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel effectively. The parallel web configuration and regular spiral flute promote efficient chip evacuation. It is commonly installed by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance mechanics working with drill presses, milling machines, and hand-held industrial drills where a shorter, stiffer bit is preferred over jobber length.
Designed as a general purpose screw machine length drill bit for use in cast iron, non-ferrous metal, and steel workpieces. Compatible with standard straight-shank drill chucks on drill presses, lathes, milling machines, and CNC machining centers. Meets ISO standards per Series 157 specifications.
Secure the straight-cylindrical shank fully into the drill chuck and verify concentricity before operation. Always wear appropriate eye protection and secure workpieces firmly before drilling. Follow shop safety procedures and applicable OSHA or facility standards when operating drill presses or CNC equipment. Do not exceed recommended feed rates or spindle speeds for the workpiece material.
