The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48533 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-productivity drilling in metalworking and fabrication environments. Built from high speed steel with a coated finish, it runs a 118-degree standard point angle with a web-thinned, parallel web configuration for improved penetration and reduced thrust. The 33/64 inch (0.5156 inch) diameter is held to a tight tolerance of +0.0000 to -0.0012 inches. With two spiral flutes in a regular helix, this bit handles chip evacuation efficiently across a range of workpiece materials. It is sized and configured for use in production screw machine setups as well as general-purpose drilling operations.
This drill bit is suited for drilling cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and steel in both shop and field settings. The screw machine length format — shorter overall than a jobber-length bit — provides added rigidity and reduced deflection in close-tolerance setups and turret-style machines. It is a general-purpose tool appropriate for machinists, fabricators, and maintenance tradespeople who need consistent hole quality in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The straight-cylindrical shank seats directly in standard drill chucks and collet holders without modification.
Designed as an OEM-style general-purpose replacement or new-install drill bit for use in screw machines, drill presses, and hand-held drilling equipment capable of accepting a straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials include cast iron, non-ferrous metal, and steel. Manufactured to ISO standards as part of CHICAGO-LATROBE Series 157.
Install and remove this bit with the machine fully powered down and the chuck or collet holder secured before tightening. Use appropriate cutting fluid or lubricant when drilling steel to extend tool life and maintain hole tolerance. Machinists and fabricators should verify chuck capacity and spindle speed against the bit diameter before operation. Inspect the cutting edges and web area for wear or chipping before each use.
