The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48412 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in cast iron and steel. It is built from high speed steel with a coated finish for added wear resistance. The bit features a 135-degree split point with web thinning, which reduces walking and lowers thrust requirements at entry. At 1-3/4 inches overall length with a 3/4-inch flute length, this stub-length geometry increases rigidity and minimizes deflection in short-hole applications. It carries a straight-cylindrical shank and a two-flute spiral configuration. Diameter tolerance is held to +0.0000 to -0.0005 inches. This bit is used by machinists, pipefitters, and mechanical contractors working with metal fabrication and equipment assembly.
The 48412 is suited for screw machine operations, CNC drilling, and general-purpose bench drilling where a short, rigid bit is required. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel. The stub-length design is common in production environments where hole depth is shallow and cycle time matters. Conformance to NAS 907 and ISO standards makes it appropriate for applications with documented quality requirements. It is sold individually with a minimum order quantity of 12 units.
Designed as an OEM-style screw machine drill bit for use in standard drill chucks and collets compatible with straight-cylindrical shanks. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel per Series 2159 design intent.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or trade professionals familiar with metal drilling operations. Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet before operation and verify the spindle is at a complete stop before bit changes. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for ferrous materials to extend tool life, noting this bit does not support through-coolant delivery. Follow applicable shop safety standards and machine manufacturer guidelines for speed and feed selection.
