The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48410 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in cast iron and steel. Built from high speed steel with a coated finish, it measures 0.098 inches (Wire Size #40) in diameter and runs a 135-degree split point for fast penetration and reduced walking on entry. The shortened screw machine length body provides added rigidity in drill press, turret lathe, and CNC applications where standard jobber length bits flex under load. Right-hand cut with a regular spiral flute and web-thinned parallel web, it handles the demanding feed rates that trade and production machinists require.
This bit is suited for production machining, maintenance, and repair work where tight tolerances and consistent hole quality matter. Its Series 2159 design meets NAS 907 and ISO standards, making it appropriate for aerospace-adjacent and industrial maintenance environments. The straight-cylindrical shank seats cleanly in standard drill chucks and quick-change toolholding systems. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel, covering the majority of industrial and mechanical service applications. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and industrial maintenance professionals are the typical end users.
Designed as a heavy-duty OEM-style replacement or production drill bit for use in standard straight-shank drill chucks and quick-change toolholding systems on drill presses, turret lathes, and CNC equipment. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel per Series 2159 specifications.
Installation and use of this drill bit should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with rotating cutting tools. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank fully in the chuck and verify runout before cutting. Always wear appropriate eye protection and ensure the workpiece is firmly fixtured before starting the spindle. Consult machine manufacturer feed and speed recommendations for HSS tooling in cast iron and steel.
