The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48388 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in cast iron and steel. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a coated finish, this bit carries a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and allows drilling to begin without a center punch. The shortened screw machine length body provides added rigidity over jobber-length bits, making it well suited for drill press and CNC turret work where chatter and deflection are concerns. Two spiral flutes with regular helix and web-thinned, parallel-web construction support efficient chip evacuation and reduced thrust in tougher materials.
This drill bit is intended for metalworking applications in both shop and field settings. It is most commonly used by machinists, tool-and-die tradespeople, and maintenance technicians drilling cast iron and steel in manufacturing, fabrication, and industrial maintenance environments. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks. At wire size 18 (0.1695 inches), it handles smaller-diameter through-holes and tapped hole preparation at common fastener sizes. It meets NAS 907 and ISO standards, making it appropriate for aerospace and precision manufacturing work where specification compliance is required.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard tooling selection for screw machine, drill press, and CNC turret applications drilling cast iron and steel workpieces requiring a wire size 18 diameter hole.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with metal drilling operations. Secure the workpiece and verify chuck grip on the straight cylindrical shank before operation. Verify spindle speed is appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter before engaging the cut. Inspect the cutting edges and coating condition before each use and replace bits showing chipping, heat discoloration, or dimensional wear.
