The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48235 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-productivity drilling in cast iron and steel. Built from high speed steel with a coated finish, it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and lowers thrust at entry. The parallel web configuration and web-thinned geometry help maintain cutting efficiency through tough workpiece materials. At 2.5 inches overall length with a 1.375-inch spiral flute, this stub-length bit offers increased rigidity compared to jobber-length alternatives, making it well-suited for CNC machining centers, drill presses, and screw machine operations where chatter control matters.
This bit is sized at Letter C, which corresponds to 0.242 inches decimal diameter, placing it in the 0.200 to 0.250 inch range. It is used in metal fabrication, production machining, and maintenance environments where accurate, repeatable hole sizing in ferrous materials is required. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks and collet holders without modification. Machinists and tool-and-die technicians working to NAS 907 specification requirements will find the Series 2159 geometry appropriate for their applications.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks and collet systems accepting straight-cylindrical shanks. Intended for drilling cast iron and steel in production machining, CNC, and manual drill press applications.
Installation and tool changes should be performed with the machine fully powered down and all energy isolated per shop lockout/tagout procedures. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in the chuck or collet to the full recommended grip depth before operation. Coolant-through operation is not supported on this bit; use flood or mist coolant externally when drilling at high feed rates in steel. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping or wear before each use, as a damaged split point will affect hole quality and diameter tolerance.
