The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48233 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-productivity drilling in ferrous materials. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a coated finish, it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and requires less feed pressure at the start of the cut. The web-thinned, parallel web construction improves chip evacuation and reduces thrust load. At 0.234 inches in diameter with an overall length of 2.4375 inches, this short-length bit fits standard drill chucks and provides added rigidity compared to jobber-length tooling. A licensed HVAC tech, machinist, or metalworking professional will find this bit well-suited to production drilling applications.
The 48233 is built for drilling cast iron and steel in screw machine, turret lathe, and CNC drilling applications where stub-length rigidity matters. The straight-cylindrical shank seats cleanly in standard drill chucks and collet holders. Two spiral flutes in a regular helix clear chips efficiently during through-hole and blind-hole operations. It is produced to NAS 907 and ISO standards, making it appropriate for controlled manufacturing environments where dimensional consistency is required.
Designed for drilling cast iron and steel. The straight-cylindrical shank is compatible with standard drill chucks and collet holders accepting a 0.234-inch shank. Series 2159 screw machine drill bits are suited for use in drill presses, turret lathes, screw machines, and CNC machining centers.
Install in a properly sized drill chuck or collet holder and verify the shank is fully seated and secured before operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the workpiece material to maximize tool life, noting that this bit does not support internal coolant delivery. Follow applicable shop safety standards and machine guarding requirements when operating drilling equipment. Replace the bit if the cutting edges show visible wear or if hole diameter tolerance drifts outside acceptable limits.
