The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48217 is a screw machine length drill bit engineered for heavy-duty drilling in cast iron and steel. It measures 17/64 inch (0.2656 inches) in diameter with a 135-degree split point that self-centers on contact and reduces walking on hard materials. The overall length is 2-5/8 inches with a 1-7/16-inch flute length, making it shorter and more rigid than jobber-length bits. Made from high speed steel with a coated finish, it handles demanding production drilling where rigidity and hole accuracy matter. This bit is part of the Series 2159 line and carries a NAS 907 specification designation, making it suitable for aerospace and precision machining environments.
This drill bit fits drilling operations in metal fabrication shops, machine shops, and production environments where screw machine length tooling is required. Its shorter body reduces deflection in CNC screw machines, turret lathes, and bench-top drill presses. Primary workpiece materials include cast iron and steel. The right-hand cut, regular spiral, and straight-cylindrical shank make it compatible with standard drill chucks and quick-change tooling systems. The web-thinned, parallel web configuration reduces thrust load, which is especially useful in high-cycle production drilling.
Designed for use in cast iron and steel workpieces. Fits standard drill chucks and quick-change tooling systems that accept straight-cylindrical shanks. Suitable for use in CNC screw machines, turret lathes, and drill presses. Part of the CHICAGO-LATROBE Series 2159.
Machinists and tool-room technicians should ensure the drill chuck or collet is fully secured before operation and that spindle speed is set appropriate to the workpiece material and bit diameter. Secure the workpiece firmly to prevent movement during drilling. Inspect the cutting edges and web for wear or chipping before each use, and replace the bit if the point shows damage to avoid oversized or off-center holes.
