The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48215 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in cast iron and steel. Built from high speed steel with a coated finish, it runs a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and lowers thrust at entry. The web-thinned, parallel-web construction improves chip clearance and cutting efficiency. At 15/64 inch (0.2344 inches) in diameter, this bit fits the mid-range of stub-length tooling and is suited for production drilling, maintenance shops, and fabrication environments where a short, rigid drill is preferred over a jobber-length bit.
The 48215 is intended for use in cast iron and steel workpieces in both shop and field applications. Its screw machine length keeps deflection low in drill press, turret lathe, CNC, and hand-held power tool setups. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard Jacobs-style chucks and collet holders. This bit is a common choice for machinists, pipefitters, and maintenance mechanics drilling close-tolerance holes where a standard jobber bit would flex or chatter under load.
Designed for drilling cast iron and steel workpieces. Fits any standard drill press, lathe, CNC machine, or hand-held drill driver equipped with a chuck or collet holder accepting a straight-cylindrical shank in the 15/64 inch diameter range. Belongs to CHICAGO-LATROBE Series 2159.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet before operation and verify runout before beginning a production run. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for steel applications to extend tool life, noting this bit does not support through-coolant. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use, as a dull or chipped split point will increase thrust and reduce hole quality. Follow applicable shop safety practices including eye protection and workpiece clamping.
