The CHICAGO-LATROBE 48212 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in cast iron and steel. Manufactured from high speed steel (HSS) with a coated finish, it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and lowers thrust on entry. The bit measures 3/16 inch (0.1875 inch) in diameter with an overall length of 2-3/16 inches and a flute length of 1-1/8 inches. The short screw machine length provides added rigidity compared to a jobber-length bit, making it well-suited for drill press work and production drilling. This bit is sold individually and installed by machinists, maintenance technicians, and metal fabricators.
The 48212 is built for production and maintenance drilling applications in ferrous metals, specifically cast iron and steel. Its compact screw machine length allows use in tight setups where a standard jobber bit would flex or deflect. The regular spiral flute and parallel web configuration support consistent chip evacuation under sustained feed rates. Web thinning reduces cutting resistance at the point, which is especially valuable when drilling harder steel grades or thicker stock. This bit conforms to NAS 907 and ISO standards, making it appropriate for use in applications where specification compliance is required.

Install in a compatible drill chuck and tighten securely before operation. Ensure the workpiece is clamped or fixtured to prevent movement during drilling. Apply appropriate cutting fluid when drilling steel to extend bit life and maintain hole quality. Inspect the cutting edges and point condition before each use; a chipped split point will increase thrust and reduce hole accuracy.
