The CHICAGO-LATROBE 47880 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in tough materials. Built to Series 550ASP standards and conforming to NAS 907 Type B specification, it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and lowers thrust requirements on entry. The straw-finish cobalt construction provides heat resistance beyond standard HSS, making it well suited for sustained production drilling. At 7.00 mm diameter with a straight cylindrical shank and right-hand spiral flute, this bit is a heavy-duty tool for trades and machinists who need consistent, repeatable results in demanding material.
This drill bit is rated for use in stainless steel and other hardened materials where standard high-speed steel bits fail prematurely. It fits standard drill chucks that accept straight shanks at 7.00 mm (0.2756 inches) shank diameter. Typical applications include fabrication shops, mechanical contractors, and field service operations requiring clean, precise holes in corrosion-resistant or heat-treated stock. The 2-flute regular spiral design promotes chip evacuation in deep-hole applications.
Designed as a heavy-duty OEM-style jobber drill for use in standard straight-shank drill chucks; primary workpiece compatibility includes stainless steel and hardened materials per Series 550ASP application guidelines.
Installation is performed by machinists, fabricators, or mechanical trade professionals using a drill press, CNC machine, or hand drill with a compatible chuck. Secure the straight shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify concentricity before drilling into hardened stock. Cutting fluid or coolant is recommended when drilling stainless steel to extend bit life, even though this bit does not feature internal coolant-through channels. Inspect the split point for chipping or wear before each use, as cobalt bits subjected to excess side-load can develop micro-fractures at the cutting edge.
