The CHICAGO-LATROBE 47720 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built to Series 550ASP standards and conforming to NAS 907 Type B specification, this bit features a 135-degree split point for fast penetration and reduced walking on entry. The gold finish indicates a surface treatment applied to cobalt steel, and the right-hand spiral flute geometry evacuates chips efficiently during operation. At 4.5 inches overall length with a 3.1875-inch flute length, it fits standard jobber-length applications across industrial and trade drilling tasks. Licensed tradespeople and machinist-level technicians are the primary users.
This bit is rated for drilling titanium and other hard metals, making it a fit for aerospace, mechanical, and heavy fabrication work where standard HSS bits wear prematurely. The straight cylindrical shank measures 5/16 inch in diameter, compatible with standard drill chucks and quick-change holders of matching capacity. The tapered web with web-thinning reduces thrust requirements when entering tough workpieces. Typical applications include structural drilling, precision hole-making in high-alloy materials, and repetitive production drilling where bit longevity is a priority.
Designed as an OEM-style jobber-length drill bit for use in standard 5/16 inch capacity drill chucks and compatible quick-change systems in industrial and trade drilling applications.
Installation is performed by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, or experienced tradespeople operating drill presses, CNC drilling centers, or hand-held power drills. Secure the straight cylindrical shank fully within the chuck and verify concentricity before drilling. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling titanium or high-alloy steels to prevent work hardening and premature bit wear. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or dulling is observed.
