The CHICAGO-LATROBE 47718 is a cobalt jobber length drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built to Series 550ASP specifications and conforming to NAS 907 Type B standards, this bit features a 135-degree split point for fast penetration and reduced walking on entry. The 9/32 inch (0.2813 inch) diameter and 4.25 inch overall length fit standard jobber proportions. The straw gold finish indicates cobalt steel construction, which retains hardness at elevated cutting temperatures. Licensed HVAC technicians, pipefitters, electricians, and plumbers regularly reach for cobalt bits when drilling through stainless, titanium, high-alloy fasteners, and hardened steel encountered in mechanical and electrical rough-in work.
The 47718 is suited for professional trade applications where standard high-speed steel bits fail prematurely. Primary workpiece material per manufacturer specification is titanium, and the bit performs reliably in other tough ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. The straight cylindrical shank seats in standard drill chucks and drill presses without modification. The regular spiral flute with tapered web and web-thinned point reduces thrust requirements and improves chip evacuation, making it practical for use in handheld drills and drill presses on the job site or in the shop.

A licensed or qualified tradesperson should select the appropriate cutting speed and feed rate for the workpiece material before drilling. Secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the shank is fully seated and tightened in the chuck before operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling titanium or stainless alloys to extend bit life and manage heat. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or dulling is observed to avoid workpiece damage or injury.
