The CHICAGO-LATROBE 47342 is a jobber-length twist drill bit designed for general-purpose hole-making in cast iron and steel. Manufactured from high speed steel with an oxide coating, it delivers consistent performance in production and maintenance drilling applications. The bit measures 9.9 mm (0.3898 inches) in diameter with a 118-degree standard point angle and a regular spiral flute configuration. Overall length is 133 mm (5.24 inches), with a flute length of 87 mm (3.43 inches) and a straight-cylindrical shank. The web-thinned, tapered web design reduces thrust and improves chip evacuation. This bit is installed by machinists, maintenance technicians, pipefitters, and general tradespeople working with ferrous metals.
The 47342 is suited for drilling cast iron and steel in both shop and field environments. Its jobber-length profile makes it compatible with standard drill chucks on hand drills, drill presses, and CNC machines. The Series 150 designation places it in CHICAGO-LATROBE's general-purpose line, built to DIN 338 standards. Right-hand cutting direction and a two-flute spiral configuration are standard for this class of bit, making it a straightforward drop-in for common drilling setups across metalworking and mechanical trades.
Designed for drilling cast iron and steel. Fits standard drill chucks accepting a 0.3898-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Suitable for use across the 9.00 mm to 10.00 mm drill bit size range per DIN 338 classification.
Secure the shank fully in the drill chuck before operation and verify concentricity to avoid bit walking on entry. Power down and de-energize any machine tool before changing bits. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for extended runs in ferrous materials, as this bit does not support through-coolant. Follow applicable shop safety standards and machine manufacturer guidelines for feed rate and RPM selection based on workpiece material and thickness.
