The CHICAGO-LATROBE 46774 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials, including titanium, stainless steel, and other tough alloys. Built to Series 550 standards, it carries an M42 cobalt steel construction with a gold oxide coating that reduces friction and extends cutting life. The 135-degree split point starts on contact without walking, eliminating the need for a center punch on most surfaces. At 4 inches overall length with a 2.75-inch flute length, this bit fits standard jobber-length drill chucks and is sized for right-hand, two-flute spiral cutting action.
This bit is suited for metalworking professionals, maintenance machinists, and fabricators working in aerospace, industrial, and heavy-duty manufacturing environments. The 0.246-inch diameter and straight-cylindrical shank make it compatible with standard keyed or keyless drill chucks in benchtop drill presses, magnetic drills, and hand drills. The tapered web and web-thinned geometry reduce thrust force, making it particularly effective when drilling titanium and high-nickel alloys where heat buildup is a concern. It conforms to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J specifications.
Designed for use in standard jobber-length drill applications requiring a 0.246-inch diameter bit with a straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece material is titanium; also suitable for high-strength alloys and hard metals consistent with M42 cobalt tooling. Fits within the 0.2000 to 0.2500 inch drill bit size range of Series 550.
Install in a properly sized drill chuck and tighten securely before operation. Always wear appropriate eye protection and secure the workpiece before drilling. When drilling titanium or hard alloys, use a cutting fluid or lubricant to manage heat and extend bit life. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace if chipping or dullness is observed to avoid workpiece damage or bit failure.
