The CHICAGO-LATROBE 46726 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit in wire gauge size 56, with a decimal diameter of 0.0465 inches and a 135-degree split point angle. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel with a gold oxide coating, this bit is engineered for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. The web-thinned, tapered-web construction reduces thrust at entry and improves chip evacuation. Overall length is 1.75 inches with a 0.375-inch flute length and a straight cylindrical shank. It meets DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards, making it suitable for aerospace and precision metalworking applications.
The 46726 is designed for drilling titanium, hardened steels, stainless, and other difficult-to-machine alloys where standard HSS bits fail prematurely. The regular spiral, two-flute configuration paired with the gold oxide finish reduces heat buildup and extends tool life in production drilling environments. This bit is installed by a machinist or tool-and-die technician in a drill press, CNC machining center, or hand-held drill rated for small-diameter bits. Secure the straight cylindrical shank firmly in the chuck before operation to prevent runout. Diameter tolerance is -0.0005 to 0.0000 inches, so inspect the shank seating and chuck condition before use in precision-fit applications. Cutting fluid or cutting oil is recommended when drilling titanium or stainless to control heat, even though the bit does not have coolant-through capability.
