The CHICAGO-LATROBE 46701 is a cobalt jobber length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built to Series 550 standards and manufactured from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, this bit carries a gold oxide finish that helps extend tool life under heat and friction. It features a 135-degree split point for fast, self-centering starts without a center punch. The straight-cylindrical shank measures 0.1200 inches in diameter, matching the No. 31 wire gauge drill size, and the bit has an overall length of 2.75 inches with a flute length of 1.625 inches. It is intended for use by machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die professionals.
This drill bit is rated for drilling titanium as its primary workpiece material, making it well suited for aerospace, defense, and precision manufacturing applications where standard high-speed steel bits fail prematurely. The two-flute spiral design with a regular spiral type clears chips efficiently in through-hole and blind-hole operations. Web thinning and a tapered web configuration reduce thrust requirements and improve cutting efficiency at the tip. Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard keyed or keyless drill chuck sized for a 0.1200-inch shank. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and confirm runout is within acceptable tolerance for the application. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling titanium or other hard alloys to manage heat buildup. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
