The CHICAGO-LATROBE 46696 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit engineered for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel with a gold oxide coating, it delivers superior heat and wear resistance compared to standard HSS bits. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust requirements, making it well-suited for production and maintenance drilling. At 3 inches overall length with a 1-7/8-inch flute length, it fits standard jobber-length drill chucks. Right-hand spiral flutes with a regular helix evacuate chips efficiently throughout the cut. This bit is classified as heavy-duty grade and conforms to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards.
The 46696 is designed primarily for drilling titanium and other hard metals where standard HSS tooling loses its edge quickly. The M42 cobalt steel composition maintains hardness at elevated cutting temperatures, making it a reliable choice for aerospace, industrial maintenance, and metal fabrication applications. The No. 26 wire gauge size corresponds to a decimal diameter of 0.1470 inches, a common size for tapping and clearance hole work in production environments. Designed as an OEM-compatible replacement or direct-purchase jobber drill bit for use in standard drill chucks accepting a 0.1470-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece material rating is titanium; also suitable for other hard ferrous and non-ferrous metals consistent with M42 cobalt tooling applications.
Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in a keyed or keyless drill chuck rated for the intended spindle speed before operation. Ensure the workpiece is clamped or fixtured to prevent movement during drilling. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling titanium and hard alloys to prolong tool life, noting this bit does not have a coolant-through feature. Inspect the split point for chipping or wear before each use and replace worn tooling to maintain hole quality and dimensional tolerance.
