The CHICAGO-LATROBE 46680 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for demanding metal-cutting applications. Manufactured from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a gold oxide coating, this bit delivers extended tool life and resistance to heat buildup during high-speed drilling. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and requires no center punch on most surfaces. At 3-5/8 inches overall length with a 2-7/16 inch flute length, it fits standard jobber-length drill chucks and right-angle drill attachments common in trade work. It cuts in a right-hand direction with a regular spiral flute and a web-thinned, tapered web for improved chip evacuation. Licensed HVAC techs, pipefitters, plumbers, and sheet metal workers will find this bit well suited to production drilling in hard and tough materials.
This drill bit is rated for primary use in titanium and other hard metals, making it a go-to choice when standard high-speed steel bits fail prematurely. Series 550 bits are built to a heavy-duty grade and conform to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards. Typical install scenarios include drilling through structural steel, stainless fastener clearance holes, sheet metal stacks, and hard alloy fittings encountered in mechanical and industrial trade work. The 0.1935 inch diameter corresponds to a wire gauge size 10, fitting within the 0.1500 to 0.2000 inch size range of this series.
Designed as a jobber-length replacement or production drill bit for use in standard 3-jaw drill chucks accepting a 0.1935 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Rated for drilling titanium and other hard metals per NAS 907 Type J specification.
This bit is installed by a machinist, sheet metal worker, or mechanical trade professional using a standard corded or pneumatic drill, drill press, or right-angle drill. Secure the straight shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify chuck key is removed before powering the tool. Use cutting fluid or coolant when drilling titanium or stainless steel to prevent work hardening and premature edge wear. Do not exceed the recommended feed and speed range for the workpiece material, as cobalt bits can fracture under excessive lateral load.
