The CHICAGO-LATROBE 46672 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built to Series 550 standards, this bit carries an M42 cobalt steel construction with a gold oxide coating that improves lubricity and extends tool life under demanding conditions. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and allows the bit to engage the workpiece without a center punch. With an overall length of 3-7/8 inches and a flute length of 2-5/8 inches, it fits standard drill chucks and handles a wide range of production and maintenance applications. It is installed by machinists, maintenance technicians, and metal fabricators working in shop and field environments.
This bit is rated for drilling titanium and other hard metals where standard high-speed steel tooling underperforms. The right-hand spiral flute clears chips efficiently during through-hole and blind-hole operations. The straight-cylindrical shank with a diameter of 0.2210 inches seats securely in standard three-jaw chucks. It conforms to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards, making it suitable for aerospace, industrial maintenance, and general metalworking applications where dimensional accuracy and bit integrity are critical.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use jobber drill bit for standard three-jaw chucks accepting a 0.2210-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece material designation is titanium; also suited for hard steels and abrasion-resistant alloys consistent with Series 550 heavy-duty grade tooling.
This bit is installed by machinists and metal fabricators using standard drill presses, hand drills, or CNC drilling equipment. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify runout before starting the cut. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling titanium or hardened alloys to manage heat and extend tool life. Inspect the split point for chipping after use on hard materials before returning the bit to service.
