The CHICAGO-LATROBE 46616 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit engineered for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a gold oxide coating, it delivers extended tool life where standard HSS bits fail. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and cutting force at entry, making it well suited for production drilling without a center punch. With a 4-inch overall length and a straight-cylindrical shank, the 46616 fits standard drill chucks and is sized for everyday trade use on the bench or in the field.
This bit is rated for drilling titanium and other high-strength metals, making it a common choice for HVAC fabricators, pipefitters, sheet metal workers, and industrial maintenance techs working with tough alloys. The 1/4-inch diameter with a 2-3/4-inch flute length handles through-holes in structural plate, angle iron, and hard stainless components. Compliant with DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards, it meets requirements found in aerospace and commercial fabrication environments.
Rated for primary use in titanium per NAS 907 Type J specification. Also suitable for drilling cobalt alloys, stainless steel, and other high-strength ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Fits any standard 1/4-inch keyless or keyed drill chuck.
Use in a variable-speed drill press or hand drill set to the appropriate RPM for the workpiece material and bit diameter. Secure the workpiece fully before drilling to prevent movement. Apply cutting fluid when drilling titanium or stainless to manage heat and extend bit life. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and retire the bit if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
