The CHICAGO-LATROBE 46607 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built to M42 cobalt steel grade, it carries a gold oxide coating that improves heat resistance and extends tool life in demanding applications. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and lowers the thrust force needed to start a hole, making it well suited for production drilling in tough workpiece materials. It runs a right-hand spiral flute with a web-thinned, tapered web configuration for efficient chip evacuation. Overall length is 2-5/8 inches with a 1-1/2 inch flute length and a straight-cylindrical shank measuring 0.1094 inches in diameter.
This bit is rated for drilling titanium and other hard metals where standard HSS bits lose their edge quickly. The Series 550 designation places it in a heavy-duty class suited for aerospace, mechanical, and industrial trade work. It meets DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards, making it a recognized choice wherever specification-controlled drilling is required. Machinists, millwrights, and maintenance technicians working in fabrication or MRO environments are the typical end users. The gold oxide finish is visible confirmation that the bit has not been reground past its treated surface.
Designed as a jobber-length replacement or production drill bit for use in standard three-jaw chucks and drill press spindles accepting a straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece material rating is titanium per NAS 907; also appropriate for stainless steel, hardened alloys, and other difficult-to-machine metals.
A licensed machinist or qualified maintenance technician should secure the shank fully in a properly sized chuck before operation. Ensure the drill press or hand drill is de-energized and the chuck key is removed before adjusting workpiece fixturing. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for titanium and hard-alloy applications to manage heat buildup, as this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Inspect the split point for chipping before each use; a damaged point affects hole accuracy and increases the risk of bit breakage.
