The CHICAGO-LATROBE 46460 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in ferrous and hard materials. Built to Series 550 standards and conforming to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J specifications, this bit features a 135-degree split point for fast penetration and reduced walking on contact. The straw-finish cobalt construction provides elevated heat resistance compared to standard HSS, making it well suited for production drilling in steel and stainless steel. At 3.30 mm in diameter with a 2.5591-inch overall length, it fits standard drill chucks and CNC spindles without modification. Two regular spiral flutes evacuate chips efficiently during the cut.
This drill bit is intended for drilling steel and stainless steel in industrial, maintenance, and fabrication environments. The split point geometry eliminates the need for a center punch on most setups, reducing cycle time on repetitive operations. The web-thinned, tapered web configuration reduces thrust requirements, which is especially useful when working with tougher alloys. It is appropriate for use in hand-held drill motors, drill presses, and CNC machining centers. The straight cylindrical shank accepts standard drill chucks across a wide range of equipment. Typical users include machinists, maintenance technicians, and fabricators working in metal trade and industrial service settings.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use jobber drill for applications requiring a 3.30 mm straight-shank cobalt bit; compatible with standard drill chucks and CNC tool holders accepting a 0.1299-inch shank diameter across drill presses, hand drills, and machining centers.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or trade technicians familiar with rotating cutting tools. Secure the straight shank firmly in the chuck before operation and verify runout is within acceptable limits before drilling. Ensure the workpiece is clamped securely to prevent movement during the cut. Do not exceed the recommended feed and speed ranges for the workpiece material and drill diameter; excessive heat will degrade cobalt performance and reduce tool life.
