The CHICAGO-LATROBE 45689 is a jobber-length, high-speed steel drill bit in wire gauge size No. 19, equivalent to 0.1660 inches in diameter. It features a 135-degree split point for fast engagement and reduced walking on entry, and an oxide finish that provides basic lubrication and corrosion resistance during cutting operations. The overall length is 3.25 inches with a flute length of 2.125 inches. It has a straight-cylindrical shank and a right-hand spiral flute with regular helix. The bit is web-thinned to reduce thrust load and conforms to NAS 907 Type B standards. Licensed HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical trades, as well as machinists and industrial maintenance techs, typically use jobber-length bits for general-purpose through-hole drilling in production and service environments.
The 45689 is rated for use in cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel workpieces. Its heavy-duty HSS grade and NAS 907 specification make it appropriate for both hand-held drilling and drill press applications where dimensional accuracy is required. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in a properly sized drill chuck before operation. Use cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel or hard cast iron to extend tool life, even though the bit does not support through-coolant delivery. Ensure the workpiece is clamped or fixtured before drilling to prevent rotation and maintain hole accuracy. Inspect the cutting edges and split point for wear or chipping before each use, and replace the bit if diameter tolerance cannot be maintained.
