The CHICAGO-LATROBE 45686 is a jobber-length twist drill bit engineered for high-performance drilling in demanding trade and industrial applications. Built from high speed steel with an oxide coating, this bit carries a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and decreases thrust required at entry. The overall length is 3-3/8 inches with a flute length of 2-3/16 inches and a straight-cylindrical shank diameter of 0.1770 inches matching the wire size 16 designation (0.1770 inch decimal). The web-thinned, tapered web construction paired with a regular spiral flute supports efficient chip evacuation and consistent hole geometry. Manufactured to NAS 907 Type B standards, this is a heavy-duty bit suited for professional use by machinists, pipefitters, HVAC fabricators, and maintenance tradespeople.
This bit is designed for drilling cast iron, stainless steel, and steel workpieces, making it appropriate for structural fabrication, sheet metal work, mechanical assembly, and equipment maintenance tasks. The 135-degree split point geometry is especially useful when entering curved or sloped surfaces and when working with harder ferrous materials that would cause a conventional 118-degree point to walk or deflect. The Series 150ASP designation identifies this as a high-performance production-grade bit suited for both hand-held drilling and drill press or machine tool setups where repeatable results are required.
Designed for use in standard straight-shank drill chucks. Rated for drilling cast iron, stainless steel, and steel workpieces. Fits any drill press, mill, or hand drill accepting a 0.1770-inch straight-cylindrical shank.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or tradespeople familiar with rotating cutting tools. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify runout before drilling. Always wear appropriate eye protection and ensure the workpiece is properly clamped before starting the cut. Do not exceed the feed rate or RPM appropriate for the material and bit diameter as specified in standard machining reference tables.
