The CHICAGO-LATROBE 45629 is a jobber-length drill bit designed for heavy-duty metal drilling applications. Built from high speed steel with an oxide coating, it measures 29/64 inch (0.4531 inch decimal) in diameter with a 5-5/8 inch overall length and a 4-3/16 inch flute length. The 135-degree split point reduces walking at the start of the hole and lowers thrust requirements compared to a standard 118-degree point. Web thinning on the tip further reduces cutting resistance. This bit is suited for machinists, millwrights, pipefitters, and maintenance technicians who drill through cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel regularly.
The 45629 fits production and maintenance drilling environments where a reliable, reusable jobber-length bit is needed for ferrous metal stock. The straight-cylindrical shank seats in standard 3-jaw drill chucks on both hand-held drills and drill presses. Its regular spiral and right-hand cut make it a straightforward drop-in for most metal-working setups. The Series 150ASP designation identifies it within the Chicago-Latrobe heavy-duty high-performance line, built to NAS 907 Type B standards.
Designed for drilling cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel. Compatible with any drill press or hand drill fitted with a chuck that accepts a 29/64 inch straight-cylindrical shank. No coolant-through capability; use appropriate cutting fluid externally when drilling stainless or hard alloys.
Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent rotation and bit breakage. Seat the shank fully into the chuck and tighten all jaws evenly before applying power. Apply cutting fluid when drilling stainless steel or hardened steel to reduce heat and extend bit life. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping after heavy use and redress or replace before accuracy degrades.
