The CHICAGO-LATROBE 45021 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiAlN coating, this bit handles heat and wear far better than standard HSS tooling. The 135-degree split point starts on contact without a center punch and reduces walking on hardened or difficult surfaces. At 2 inches overall length with a 1-inch flute, it fits standard jobber-length applications across machine shop and field service environments. Licensed HVAC, mechanical, and pipefitting contractors working titanium substrates or other hard alloys will find this bit suited to their production and service drilling needs.
The 45021 is engineered specifically for drilling titanium and comparably hard workpiece materials where tool life and hole accuracy are critical. The TiAlN coating reduces friction and extends cutting life under high-speed, dry, or semi-dry drilling conditions. Wire size 51 corresponds to a decimal diameter of 0.0670 inches, placing it in the small-diameter range used for precision clearance holes, pilot holes, and tapping prep work. It is sold as a single bit per package and conforms to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards, making it suitable for aerospace and industrial MRO applications where specification compliance is required.
Designed as a Series 550TA jobber-length drill bit conforming to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J, suitable for use in standard three-jaw chucks and collet systems accepting a straight-cylindrical shank with a 0.0670-inch diameter. Primary workpiece material is titanium; also applicable to other hard and abrasive alloys where M42 cobalt tooling is specified.
Installation is performed by machinists, tool and die tradespeople, and mechanical contractors using standard drill presses, CNC machines, or hand-held electric drills with appropriate chuck capacity. Ensure the machine spindle and chuck are in good condition before seating the straight-cylindrical shank to prevent runout. Confirm drilling parameters including speed and feed are appropriate for the workpiece material before beginning; exceeding recommended speeds will shorten tool life and may damage the TiAlN coating. Always wear appropriate PPE including eye protection when operating rotary cutting tools.
