The CHICAGO-LATROBE 45010 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built to M42 cobalt steel material grade, this bit carries a TiAlN coating that extends tool life under heat-intensive cutting conditions. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and requires no center punch on most surfaces. It runs a right-hand spiral flute with a straight-cylindrical shank at 0.0980 inches diameter and an overall length of 2-3/8 inches. The 1-3/8 inch flute length handles typical jobber-depth holes efficiently. This bit is sized to wire gauge 40 and is built for professional machinists and maintenance techs working with titanium and other difficult-to-machine materials.
The 45010 is suited for production and MRO drilling applications where standard HSS bits wear prematurely. Its primary workpiece material designation is titanium, making it a go-to choice in aerospace, medical, and precision manufacturing environments. The Series 550TA designation places it in a high-performance drill line built to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards. Installation is carried out in a drill press, CNC machining center, or handheld drill motor by a machinist or skilled maintenance technician. The web-thinned, tapered web configuration reduces thrust load and improves chip evacuation, which matters when drilling small-diameter holes at depth in tough alloys.
