The CHICAGO-LATROBE 44984 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built to M42 cobalt steel specification, it carries a TiAlN coating that extends tool life under elevated heat conditions. The 135-degree split point geometry reduces walking and decreases the thrust required to start the cut. At 3-3/8 inches overall length with a 2-3/16-inch flute, this bit fits standard jobber-length applications and is used by machinists, maintenance technicians, and metalworking tradespeople who drill titanium and similarly demanding workpiece materials.
This bit is built for primary use in titanium and other high-strength metals where heat buildup and tool wear are the primary concerns. The Series 550TA designation, combined with conformance to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards, positions it as a precision tool suited for aerospace, industrial maintenance, and production environments. The right-hand spiral flute with regular helix and web-thinned tapered web configuration promotes chip evacuation and reduces cutting resistance during deep-hole operations in tough stock.
Designed as an OEM-style precision replacement or direct-use jobber drill bit for applications requiring a No. 14 wire gauge size (0.1820 inch decimal) with a straight-cylindrical shank diameter of 0.1820 inch. Primary workpiece material per specification is titanium; suitable for other high-strength ferrous and non-ferrous metals within the 0.1500 to 0.2000 inch drill bit size range category.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or metalworking technicians using a standard drill press, CNC machining center, or hand drill with a compatible chuck. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped and the machine is powered down before changing bits. No coolant-through capability is present on this bit; use appropriate external cutting fluid when drilling titanium or hardened steel to manage heat. Follow applicable shop safety standards and machine-specific operating procedures for spindle speed and feed rate selection.
