The CHICAGO-LATROBE 44827 is a taper length drill bit engineered for high-performance drilling in tough ferrous and exotic materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel with a black oxide finish, this bit delivers the heat resistance and edge retention required when working through cast iron, high-tensile steel, Inconel, manganese steel, and titanium. The 135-degree split point is web-thinned for self-centering starts without a center punch, reducing walking and improving hole entry accuracy. At 27/64 inch (0.4219 inch) diameter, it fits a standard straight cylindrical shank and is suited for use in drill presses, CNC machines, and heavy-duty hand drilling applications in production or maintenance environments.
This bit is used in industrial, manufacturing, and heavy mechanical service settings where standard HSS tooling fails prematurely. The taper length body provides additional flute depth compared to jobber-length bits, making it practical for deeper hole applications in thick plate or structural sections. Machinists, toolroom technicians, and maintenance mechanics working with hard or abrasive alloys will find the M42 cobalt construction particularly effective for sustained drilling cycles without regrinding. It is sold individually as a single-piece package with a minimum order of one unit.
Rated for use in cast iron, high-tensile steel, Inconel, manganese steel, and titanium. Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use taper length drill in any application requiring a 27/64 inch straight-shank cobalt bit in the CHICAGO-LATROBE Series 520 lineup.
Install in a drill press, lathe tailstock, or CNC spindle using a collet or drill chuck rated for the 27/64 inch straight cylindrical shank. Ensure the workpiece is firmly fixtured before starting the cut; taper length bits generate higher side loads than jobber-length tools. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling Inconel, titanium, or hardened steel to extend tool life. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping or wear before each use and replace when diameter tolerance cannot be maintained.
