The CHICAGO-LATROBE 44823 is a cobalt taper length drill bit from the Series 520 line, designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel with a black oxide finish, this bit delivers heat and wear resistance in demanding production environments. The 135-degree split point promotes self-centering on entry and reduces the thrust force needed to start a hole. With a flute length of 4.25 inches and an overall length of 6.75 inches, the taper length profile reaches deeper than a jobber bit while maintaining rigidity. Machinists and maintenance tradespeople rely on this geometry for consistent hole quality in tough materials.
The 44823 is suited for drilling cast iron, high-tensile steel, Inconel, manganese steel, and titanium. These are materials commonly encountered in industrial maintenance, fabrication shops, aerospace component work, and heavy equipment repair. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks and CNC machine spindles. The spiral flute with regular spiral type clears chips efficiently during through-hole and deep drilling operations. The web-thinned, tapered web configuration reduces cutting resistance and helps maintain point integrity under load.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks and CNC spindles accepting a straight cylindrical shank. Rated for drilling cast iron, high-tensile steel, Inconel, manganese steel, and titanium. Part of the CHICAGO-LATROBE Series 520 taper length cobalt drill bit line.
Secure the shank fully in a properly sized drill chuck or collet before operation. Ensure the workpiece is clamped or fixtured to prevent movement during drilling. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the material being drilled, particularly when working with Inconel or titanium, to manage heat buildup and extend tool life. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and remove the bit from service if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
